Noël! 3

Jamie W. Hall

I’ve written more than once in various places about As I Lay Upon A Night, by Jamie W. Hall, which we published late last year. It’s a beautiful setting of an unusual mediaeval text for Christmas. We’ve very proudly listened to it being sung by, among others, the BBC Singers, and broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

Well now Novello, in their own, endearing way, have backed up our opinion of this piece by including it in their latest collection of choral pieces for Christmas, Noël! 3, which has just been released. As I Lay Upon A Night is the 4th piece in the set.

Other pieces in the volume, which contains over 40 pieces in all, include settings by Tavener, Richard Rodney Bennett, Herbert Howells and David Hill, as well as James McMillan’s sublime O Radiant Dawn, and there’s something for everyone, with I Wonder As I Wander and Walking In The Air both included in the final cut. And I can hardly not mention Tua Bethlehem Dref, in an arrangement by Geoffrey Webber (see me after class if you need me to go over the Welsh words with you).

You can see the full list of pieces in Noël! 3 and order copies from musicroom.com by clicking here. They cost £12.95 each. Do please let us know in the comments what you think of the collection.

(Of course, it’s still available on its own from the Chichester Music Press for £1.20 a copy. Just click here for the order form.)

Congratulations to Jamie for adding this very exciting new string to his already impressively-strung bow (see his biography here).
